Here at bass-guitar-essentials.com you'll find everything you need to move forward as a bass guitar player--to learn more, to grow, and to increase your skills.
That's why I love playing bass. I'm always learning something new...and I'm excited to be able to share my passion with you. You might be a beginner, an experienced vet, or an old pro. Whatever your skill level, you and I share a passion for this amazing instrument. Come along with me, learn from my experience, and share your own stories and expertise.
Essential means different things to different people. If you're a beginner, learning about your instrument, and how to play it, is essential to you. If you've been playing for a while, essential might mean diving deeper into scales, arpeggios and riffs, or learning more about techie stuff.
Regardless of your definition of essential there is something here for you.
Love making music?
If you're anything like me, you just love making music.
And as a bass guitar player (or someone who wants to play bass) there is something about the bass line that draws you--that punchy, low-end pattern locked-in with the drums, driving and supporting a song.
You like the role of laying down your own unique bottom-end. Injecting power and emotion into the song.
At the same time you like being part of the team, working together to create a sound that moves you and your audience simultaneously.
What does it take to be a great bass player?
Creating your own unique sound grows out of a combination of musical knowledge, playing skills, a quality instrument, appropriate sound and effects equipment, and an understanding of how to put it all together.
It also helps to know something about how other bass players do it--and how they have been doing it over the last several decades.
But most of all it's about injecting something that comes from deep inside yourself--a creative spark that turns notes into music, and music into art. If you are a musician, you know what I'm talking about.
I've been playing electric bass for a long time--over forty years. When I started out Paul McCartney was playing cool bass lines on Hey Jude, using a pick on a left-handed Hofner bass. I was hooked.
Since then I've learned a lot about making music, about playing bass, and about what it takes to grow as a musician. I’ve played in basements, in halls, in churches, in clubs, and in stadiums. I’ve played pop, country, gospel, rock, and even old-time dance music. One thing I know is that we don't grow in a vacuum.
Of course we all need to do the woodshedding thing, getting alone, practicing, developing our skills. But we also need to get out there and learn new stuff, interact with other musicians, and just play.
I'll admit...for a long time I was shy about asking other musicians "stupid" questions. I was afraid they would see just how little I knew. But I finally realized that we all have gaps in our knowledge. Even the experienced players.
Not only that. I realized that most bass guitar players are more than willing to share what they have learned.
Over the course of the last 40 years I've become proficient at playing this incredible instrument. But I learned the hard way... through trial and error. That's why I created bass-guitar-essentials.com. I want to help you avoid setbacks and move more quickly than I did to a high level of proficiency. You can do it! And I look forward to helping you get there.
